Private Health Insurance; we don’t just sell it, we use it too!

Below is an example of how important Private Health Insurance can be to bypass NHS waiting times. Recently one of our team became quite sick and fortunately for him he was able to receive diagnosis quickly….here is his story.
I started to suffer with chronic stomach pains on Saturday 15th November 2014 and was able to arrange an appointment with my GP at 10:00am the following morning. She recommended an ultra sound but did say it would be around a 4 month wait. I explained I had Private Medical Insurance so she gave me a referral letter there and then. I rang my insurer Aviva immediately to obtain authorisation and then arranged for an Ultra Sound at 8:00am the following morning. This was then followed up by a visit to the consultant at 18:00pm on the same evening.
The Ultra Sound showed nothing, so the consultant recommended an MRI scan and blood tests. Both these were carried out on the Thursday at 8:00am, followed by a consultation the same date at 18:00pm.
The MRI did not detect any abnormalities, but the blood tests did indicate a severe drop in blood liver function. The consultant had no explanation for this so he phoned a liver specialist at South Tyne Hospital and he drove over to the Spire Hospital in Washington so see me at 20:30 that same evening.
He explained that the liver dysfunction was due to an abnormal reaction to some medication I had started taking about three months ago. Two tablets were isolated as the cause that night, so I was instructed to stop taking them immediately and I was booked in for further blood test on Friday 21st November 2014.
The condition has now been remedied but this whole process could have taken 18 months via the NHS and I believe I wouldn’t be here now.
